The classic recipe
Ingredients (serves 10-12)
- 1 lb lasagna noodles (no-boil or traditional)
Meat sauce
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 large onion, diced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 (28-oz) cans crushed tomatoes
- 6 oz tomato paste
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt; pepper
Bechamel
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 3 cups whole milk (warm)
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- Salt; pepper
Cheese layer
- 15 oz ricotta
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano
- 1 lb shredded mozzarella
Method
- Make meat sauce: brown meats, add aromatics, add tomatoes, simmer 30+ min
- Make bechamel: melt butter, whisk flour, slowly add milk, whisk until thick
- Cook noodles if using traditional (no-boil skip this)
- Mix ricotta + eggs + Parmigiano
- Layer in 9x13: meat sauce, noodles, ricotta mixture, mozzarella, bechamel drizzle. Repeat.
- Top with extra mozzarella
- Bake at 375°F for 45-55 minutes
- Rest 15 minutes before slicing
