The best kids' gifts are the ones still in rotation in February. This guide is organized by age and avoids the toys-of-the-year that get six minutes of attention before joining the closet.
Ages 2-4 — pretend play wins
- Wooden play kitchen or tool bench — open-ended pretend play that lasts years
- Magnetic tiles (Magna-Tiles) — best toy money you'll ever spend
- Picture book box set — Mo Willems, Sandra Boynton, Eric Carle
- Ride-on scoot bike (no pedals) — outdoor gift that gets daily use
Watch out
Avoid: anything with 200 small pieces, anything battery-powered that makes noise, anything that needs to be assembled on Christmas Eve.
Ages 5-7 — building and games
- LEGO sets appropriate to age (the kit difficulty rating is accurate)
- First "real" board game — Ticket to Ride: First Journey, Catan Jr.
- Watercolor + sketchbook set if there's an artist forming
- Two-wheel bike with training wheels for the older end of the range
Ages 8-12 — interests sharpen
- Drone with camera (sub-$100 options are excellent now)
- Polaroid-style instant camera + film
- Bigger LEGO sets — Technic, Architecture, BOTS lines
- A real cookbook if they like to bake — Joy of Cooking: All About Cookies is a winner
- Roller skates / scooter / skateboard for the active kid
Gifts that backfire
- Goldfish, hamsters, anything that breathes (always ask parents first)
- Loud electronic toys with no off switch
- Anything requiring a subscription
- Clothes — kids almost never want clothes for Christmas
Stocking stuffers under $10
Pencils with names on them, novelty erasers, mini Etch-a-Sketch, glow sticks, fancy markers, a single Hot Wheels, a kids' magazine subscription that arrives monthly.
