Christmas Gifts for Gamers — Every Console, Every Budget
Christmas gifts for gamers — by platform, by budget, by playstyle. From accessories under $25 to splurge tech, plus the gifts that work for the gamer who has everything.
Updated May 21, 2026
Gifting for gamers is easier than the stereotype suggests, IF you understand their setup. A PS5 player wants different things than a PC gamer; a Nintendo Switch player wants different things than a competitive Counter-Strike player. The wrong console accessory is a useless gift.
This guide is by platform and playstyle.
First: what platform do they play on?
If you don't know, this is the question to ask. The most common platforms:
- PlayStation 5 — Sony's current console
- Xbox Series X / S — Microsoft's current console
- Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 — handheld + TV hybrid
- PC (gaming) — Steam, Battle.net, Epic, etc.
- Steam Deck — handheld PC
- Mobile — competitive mobile gamers exist
- VR (Meta Quest 3, Valve Index) — increasingly common
The wrong-platform gift problem: an Xbox controller for a PS5 player is unusable. A "gamer headset" that doesn't work with their platform is unusable.
Quick picks by budget
| Budget | Standout pick |
|---|---|
| Under $25 | A new game gift (digital download), premium controller grips, a really good gaming mouse pad |
| Under $50 | A specific game on their platform, a quality controller charger, a Steam gift card |
| Under $100 | A new controller, a quality wireless mouse, decent gaming headphones |
| Under $200 | Premium headphones (Sony WH-1000XM5), a great gaming chair |
| Splurge | A premium gaming chair, a serious mouse + keyboard combo, an upgrade to their setup |

Universal gamer gifts (work for any platform)

- A premium gaming desk pad (Razer, Artisan, or similar)
- A bluetooth speaker for the gaming room
- A gaming-themed wall art print in their style
What to avoid
Don't buy a controller, headset, or accessory without confirming the platform. "Universal" gaming accessories rarely work well across platforms. A wrong-platform headset becomes a paperweight.
- Anything generic from a discount aisle — quality gaming gear is specific
- A controller for the wrong console — wrong-platform = unusable
- "Gaming" themed merchandise that's actually low quality
- A game they already own — check their library before buying
- A "gamer mug" or "gamer hoodie" unless they specifically like that aesthetic
- A console accessory for an older generation they no longer have
The "ask them" framework
For uncertain gifts, the conversation:
"Hey, I want to get you something for your gaming setup but I don't want to buy the wrong thing. Is there a wishlist anywhere I can see, or a specific accessory you've been eyeing?"
This is not lazy — it's respectful of how specific gaming gear preferences are.
Game gifting via digital codes
For digital game gifts:
- Buy from the platform's gift system (PSN gifting, Xbox gifting, Steam gifting)
- Don't buy from third-party "key resellers" — sketchy, often unauthorized
- Include a personal note about why you picked the game
- Time it right — schedule the email to arrive on Christmas morning
The wishlist conversation
If you genuinely don't know what to buy:
- Steam wishlist sharing — Steam users can share their wishlist via URL
- PSN wishlist — PlayStation users have a similar feature
- Xbox wishlist — same on Xbox
- Nintendo wishlist — the eShop has wishlists
Ask them to send you their wishlist URL. Pick from it.
