My husband and I own a home in Connecticut, but we can not accommodate more for us, and we can not refinance because their credit score is very low. It seems that the only two options either rent the upstairs bedrooms or sell the house.

2 Thoughts on What are the pros and cons of renting a bedroom?

Con: You never know who you are going to get.
    Can you trust them?
You won’t have as much privacy as you do now, but you can set the rules and draw up an agreement
    to abide by.
Make sure if you do, you interview people and get references and call them.
You can make them pay a down payment of some sort, a deposit that they can get back if there is no
    damage when they move out.

Pros: Financial help, but you have to realize there will be a bigger water bill, electric bill, etc

    Can they use your phone?
Who can they bring to your house?
There are all sorts of things to consider.

You may get a great tenant, or you might get one that is not on the same hours as you or may eat your food, or whatever.

Pray about it before you make that kind of decision.

The benefit is you get money. The bad? Roommates can be terrible and if they are bad the wrong time to figure it out is after they move in. Better you sell the house than have a bad roommate in your house. If you can find someone you trust all is good. But if you let the wrong one in your house you will wish you died. Like if they don’t pay you and you have to look at them all the time. Getting a roommate is the last resort. People can be terrible. And they don’t care about you.
