I have been trying to figure out what to do with myself during this economic turmoil. I have a job I do not like and have been thinking about getting a Masters degree in Finance. I am trying to figure out if that will benefit me in any way. I plan on getting an MBA after a few years but for now I want to get a competitive advantage to get a job I like.

Is there anyone out there that has this degree and has experience with it? I would like some advice. I know the value of education but I don’t know if the degree in Finance will be worth the time and debt.
I guess I am rambling now, but basically is there anyone that can shed light on the subject?

Well it really depends on what you want to do in finance.

Obviously its not of much help if you want to work for a pooled investment fund (e.g. hedge, private equity, venture capital), investment banking, or management consulting.

On the other hand, if you want to work as an accountant, auditor, or tax attorney, it could definitely help.

Another alternative to consider is studying for the CPA or CFA exams – these are accepted everywhere and are recognized industry wide as solid credentials.

Best of luck – and I know it sounds cliche – but even a job you hate in an economy like this is at least something of a plus.
