i have very small amount of personal belongings with me. so i am wondering why i have to pay tenants insurance while my bf has homeowners on this house. can i drop it?

3 Thoughts on tenants insurance? i rent my house and pay rent/live with my bf. i’ve been paying homeowners and tenant ins!

    You never have to have renter’s insurance unless your lease says so (which I have never encountered). However, if you are paying him rent, then his homeowners’ insurance is unlikely to cover your belongings. If you want some insurance to cover your belongings, then you’ll need renter’s insurance. If you’re not worried about it, then drop the renter’s insurance.

    You don’t have to buy renter’s insurance. It is recommended but not mandatory. If you haven’t that much to lose I would not waste the money. Calculate how much your items are worth then compare that to the cost of your insurance premium and make your decision.
