My friend needs to clean up his credit but has gotten himself so much in debt he can afford to pay for bankruptcy. Are there any programs that can help him file. Every place we have called wants 1500.00 to file.

A person should not file bankruptcy to “clean up his credit.” Bankruptcy is not about credit scores.
Bankruptcy is an alternative to debtors’ prisons, and should be used by people who have debts that they cannot repay.

Your friend should make an appointment with a bankruptcy attorney. Most offer one free consultation for this purpose. Some of the questions that need to be answered are:

    – is bankruptcy right for this person at this time? (merely having a lot of debts or “bad credit” does not necessarily mean that bankruptcy is the best solution for that particular person at that particular time — for example, the person could be “judgment proof” in which case filing bankruptcy is just an extra expense that will not benefit the debtor)

    – if bankruptcy is the best solution, which chapter of bankruptcy is appropriate? (some clients file Ch 13 rather than Ch 7 simply because the attorney’s fee can be paid through the Ch 13 Plan rather than having to save up the fee ahead of time)

    – if ch 7 is the best solution, how can the debtor come up with the money for the filing fee? (this is a question that a good bankruptcy attorney should discuss with the client — not just send them away with a seemingly impossibly high $ number and tell them to come back when they have it)
