    It’s generally cheaper to buy land and build your own home if you know how. You might have to contract out for the plumbing and the electrical.

    Land is probably cheapest in Montana and Wyoming.

    It depends. Are you going to build the home yourself then it would be cheaper but I doubt you will. Even if you buy land and build a home it may be cheaper but it is a pain in the ass and takes a lot of time and work. Montana and Wyoming are probably the cheapist I would guess.

    Washington and Oregon now has some of the most expensive land on the west coast. The prices have reached Southern California levels. Try looking for land in Montana and Wyoming.

    Generally, if you have a contractor build the house, it is a wash whether you buy a standing home or have a custom home built. The only advantage will be the standing home will have the landscaping done.

    If you build it or part of it yourself, then it will be cheaper to have a new home built.
