Ok so minimum specs I would look for would be:
    Hp or Toshiba (not Acer)
    2GB of ram
    1.5 dual core processor
    200 gb hard drive

I’m not a mac user, I am all about the PC! I can tell you that dell has some great new ones out that have many features on them. I’ve owned many different gateway and dell laptops, but I think the best one for the inexpensive cost that I’ve owned is the Dell Inspirion. It has a CD burner, player, and DVD player, 80 gigs hardrive, and a great battery that lasts about 2 hours without ac power. It’s great for work and home use! When I bought it a year ago I paid 600, but I bet if you got it today it would be cheaper, or you could get a better one for the same price.

If you are doing 3d modeling I would recommend that you stay with a desktop. Laptops are just too limited with the ability to upgrade. However, if you really want one that can handle 3d modeling and rendering I would recommend the Dell XPS M1730. It is the closest thing to a workstation you can get. It is real pricey, so dont get sticker shock. Base package starts at 3k.

    Good luck

    Specs are

\Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme Edition X7900, capable of overclocking to 3.4GHz
    Genuine Windows Vista® Ultimate
AGEIA PhysX – the M1730 is the world’s first and only laptop to offer a physics processing unit, for jaw-dropping graphics
Up to 4GB of DDR2 memory – for blazing speed

The best lap top you can get is a TOSHIBA. you need to go straight to the top of the line. I would suggest and AMD dual core processor, 2 – 4 gigs of RAM, etc. . You may also wish to consider a large external monitor and a USB external hard drive for storage. Hope this helps
