Are there public records (in Chapel Hill, NC — or in any city for that matter) regarding what houses have been built on flood plains? I want to know if the neighborhoods that we are considering tend to flood in heavy rain… Thanks!

You can check with the planning commission of your municipality or county and they should be able to tell you.

Flood plain maps are also available on line at msc.fema.gov.

    Good luck!

The fema site is good but I think the easiest is to personally visit your city hall. The people there normally are very helpful at showing you things, explaining their meaning and answering your questions.
