If you have inaccurate info on your credit report, then here is how to request validation of debts: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre21.shtm

Defaults and late pays on your credit report that “really” happened will stay for 7 years, starting from the original default date. As nice as it would be, we cannot go into our credit reports and zap out negative info that we do not like. There is no such thing as instant credit repair for damaged credit. It takes time to heal bad credit.

If you pay/settle defaults, your credit report will get updated to Paid with a $ 0 balance, but the items will stay for the remaining period of 7 years.
    – Paying back any charged off/defaulted credit cards will do little or nothing for your credit rating/score. Paying non credit card defaults can help over time.
