How much could an engine rebuild for a 3400 SFI 60 degree v6 GM motor cost? Its out of a 2002 grand am GT. How much would parts cost, and then labor? And how much time? I may be able to just do it myself. Thank you in advance. 🙂

an engine rebuild can run from around $ 600 or so and that includes the full clean up of the engine and honing and all the goodys and can take time from 1 week to a few months lol depending on what shop does it.

I’d expect that as much as half of the cost estimated by shop to do your engine rebuild would be the labor, and much of that labor cost would be the hours to remove the engine from the car, and to put it back in and test and tune it afterward.

So if you know well the problem you are trying to address, maybe say for example the problem is identified as a “burnt valve” then *maybe* the engine doesn’t need to be completely removed, it could be done by just removing the Heads, and sending them to a shop that can mill it and reseat the valves, and then you have to put them back on correctly, with the proper new gaskets, proper tension and order of tightening on the head bolts and such. If it is put on wrong, if something is done in the wrong order, it may overheat and blow again.

But if you aren’t an experienced mechanic, it may be a challenge to decide what you can do vs what you should farm out. It can really be much more expensive to do yourself if you end up doing it wrong and having to do it over again later :-p
