I was told the statute of limitations is a couple of years on an old debt. I don’t know. I live in new jersey. I need to find out. need details how and where to find this information. this would help me with my complaint.

    The NJ statute is 6 years. After 6 years, they cannot take you to court, unless you did something to lengthen the statute limitations. The item will continue to appear on your credit report for an additional year, but they can’t take you to court for collections.

    statute of limitations for New Jersey is 6 years

    Atleast in California it is 7 years before it is discharged from your credit record, you can look up the information under your government website under debt I think.

    I don’t think there is one. Companies will “normally” charge off your account after a certain amount of time (usually around 210 days). They can then sell your account to a separate collection company, who can then sell it to another and another and so on….In most cases it is charged off but sometimes it depends on the circumstances, like the amount of the debt. They are within their rights to sue you for the money back, unfortunately!

    Chrissy, you don’t know what you are talking about.

    What type of debt is this? Contracts are 6 years….but if this is an oral or credit card debt it’s only 3 years.

    If its a collection agency they can’t do aything to you like take you to court. its uaualy 3 to seven years. search the internet to find out about NJ
