About 8 years ago, I screwed up a little by joining a gym, and then I lost my job. They wouldn’t let me out of the contract, so they just kept billing me and billing me. I wasn’t able to get another job throughout that year and they sent it to a credit bureau. I also had a lot of past medical bills that I just couldn’t pay. Anyway, that was so long ago, but I still can’t get a credit card. How can I build my credit without a credit card?

If you’re in college, paying off your student loan will help out greatly.Paying off any other type of loan would do the same.

If you DID have a credit card, you could use it once a month on something like gas, and pay off the entire portion when the bill came in. But I’m assuming your interest rate would be quite high, so I wouldn’t use it for anything other than that.

Find a bank that will offer you a secured credit card. Usually, it’ll be for something small, like $ 500. You pay $ 500 to open the account, and get it back when you close the account.

That way, you can use the credit card to build your credit, but if you end up defaulting, the bank will just keep your $ 500. This is rare among banks these days, and it is NOT the same as a debit card, so you will have to do some looking.

Watch out for the annual fees on some of these cards though. Bank of America has one that has a $ 39 annual fee. If you can’t find any others, this might be a good solution anyway. Just close it as soon as you can get a regular credit card.

You could start with simple credit repair to challenge any negative and inaccurate info on your report. Then you could go with one of those authorized user tradeline programs to boost your score a bit. Both these things, if successful, could boost you 100+ points. Good luck.
