I need to get preapproved for a loan ASAP as I am ready to put in an offer on a house.* My agent tells me that there is no harm in going to various lenders/mortgage brokers to get the best rate, because although they do perform a credit check which lowers your credit score, home buyers are allowed to get as many of these credit checks without it hurting your score, so long as it is all within a certain number of days (she thought it was 30).
I’m probably not explaining this perfectly, but does this make sense? I am going to check out the major banks — Wells Fargo, B of A, Chase, and maybe a broker, but I just wanted to get some confirmation that allowing them all to run credit checks on me would not harm my score.* Does anyone know the number of days I can do this?
Thanks in advance.
