I’m moving down to FL in January and need to rent an apartment. I was reading that they do a background check and check your credit score. I don’t really have any credit though.

4 Thoughts on Does your credit score affect your chances of getting “approved” for an apartment?

It depends. Most landlords check credit to make sure you are not in debt to another landlord or apartment community and to make sure you don’t owe any utility providers that would prevent you from establishing service in your own name. Landlords also look to your credit to help them determine your potential for paying your rent on time. If you have zero credit, the landlord may ask for a larger deposit. If you have poor credit the landlord may deny your application or ask for a larger deposit. If you have good rental history and strong job history or income – that will help overcome any credit issues. One more tip: Private landlords tend to consider credit less than professional management company landlords. Good Luck!

Yes, they probably will check credit but with a little preparation you should be OK. Take with you letters of reference from any previous landlords. If you have had utilities in your name, get a print out of your payment record as that will help, too.

No credit is not the impediment that bad credit is.

The score has very little to do with that situation. Landlords(and most other creditors) look at the actual contents of the report. They will look for judgments, collections for leases, utilities… This would also give them a general idea of your other financial obligations. If you have not credit then you would have none of these.

Without any substantial credit, the landlord/management will require that you have a co-signer/guarantor.
