Go talk to a mortgage person it is there job to know what grants and assistance are available. FHA has lots of programs for first time home owners. Real Estate Agent can also help point you in the right direction, they sell homes and know mortgage companies who can help with financing your first home.

Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov is the ONLY place where you can apply for government grants legitimately. If you already went to Grants.gov and found nothing, it’s because there are no government grants for first time homeowners.

The Housing and Urban Development in their Grants Available page makes it clear that they do not provide grants to individuals — hence no grants for a person to buy a home http://www.hud.gov/grants/index.cfm

“While HUD does not offer direct grants or loans to individuals, we do work through local governments and non-profit organizations to make financial assistance and counseling available.”

As HUD instructs, go to non profit organizations — which are recipients of these grants. Check out Habitat for Humanity, though you need to put in sweat equity to get one of their houses (you need to build the house yourself along with some other volunteers).

Your best bet is to visit the Nehemiah Corp as they have a downpayment assistance program for first time homebuyers http://www.getdownpayment.com/ – visit them and find out how they can help you
