Hello Friendly Folks! My family and I will be attending Disneyland for the first time next week. I am doing what I can; of course, to save as much money as possible. As with any vacation, we want our children to come home with souvenirs. We will get the regulars of course ~ the “Ear Hats”, the decorative and bulgy character cups, etc. However, I know that these items are also available at the local Disney Store in the mall. But I am wondering if Disney keeps their costs the same everywhere ~ or if I would actually save a lot of money by going to the store ~ purchasing these items, and handing them out to the kids along the way during our vacation. With that being said, I have found lots of wonderful “Tips & Tricks” to Disneyland Money Savers. Many have listed ways to get “free” souvenirs. But I do not want to rely on that as these opportunities are not always available. So at least for our favorite items, like the ones mention above ~ I am wondering if I should pre-purchase them as mentioned? So I suppose I am sending this question out to anyone who is quite familiar with actual Disneyland costs. As an example, the Disney Store sells the ear hats for around $ 12. Are they more on site? And so on! Thank you so much in advance for your time and suggestions!

The Disney Store is only cheaper when they are running sales, generally on off season items. The Disney Ear Hats at the park start at $ 12 based on the features that you pick. The choices are really limited at the Disney Store for ear hats. At the Disneyland park, you can actually “create your own” with any ears you want (or two different ears),patches, etc. It’s definitely worth the extra dollar to create them at the park.

The only souveniers consistently cheaper at the Disney store are autograph books and pens, they jack those prices up a lot at the park. You can always make your own from a cheap scrapbook (half page size) from Walmart and plaster it with stickers.

Bottom line, the Disney Store is not much cheaper than Disneyland. Even if you get souveniers to pass out along the way, the kids will still see something they want at Disneyland. Make a souvenier budget for each family member and let them go crazy at Disneyland. It’s part of the magic!

Perhaps you could find suitable souvenirs at either the Disney Store Outlet (first link) or the Disney Character Warehouse stores (second link). I have visited both and found the occasional bargain.

I agree with the idea of a souvenir budget for each person.

The Mickey Ears hats are not that expensive at the park… I haven’t been in a while (last trip in 2006) but I think I remember a price between 10 and 12 bucks for a “regular” pair. Plus at the park you can get your name embroidered on them also which also makes it special.

One thing to do to save some money (to spend on goodies) is to eat outside the park when possible. Breakfast can be eaten at Denny’s or Coco’s which are both close to the park for a bigger sit down type breakfast or you can hit up a Burger King or McDonald’s for a fast food breakfast if you want and save the park prices for food. If you eat a big breakfast maybe you will eat a lighter lunch also.

Also order kids meals for the kids and the adults that have smaller appetites. They have plenty of food (like mini corn dogs and chicken nuggets.. you get 6 in a kids meal with fries and a drink… its enough for me for a lunch)
