What you need, is a garage liability policy, and workers compensation policy. It’s highly unlikely that a dealership will let you work on their lot, WITHOUT workers comp coverage – because then THEY are responsible for your injuries.

Regarding how much, there’s practically NO price difference, between $ 100,000 and $ 1,000,000 of liability coverage, and you’ll need to insure up to 100% of the maximum value of the car that you mess up. So you’re REALLY going to have to ask each dealership, what their insurance requirements are, for you to work on their premises.

This coverage is going to START at $ 3,000, and only go up from there.

You’d buy it, from a local, independent agent. For this type of risk, as a new venture, it’s probably going to end up with your assigned risk auto pool in your state. There aren’t going to be more than a couple insurers WILLING to insure your operations. Start with the guy that does your personal house and car insurance, and if he can’t do it, ask for a referral to someone local who CAN.

Be prepared to go in and fill out a ton of paperwork up front; and allow a week or two for them to get you a quote.

Depends on a lot of variables (limits you need, length of time in biz, any claims, zip code, etc.). Go online and time commercial insurance quotes and you should find some markets for you.
