I have nearly completed my PPL training. That being said, I have also been considering enrolling in a 4 year program at a college close by that would give me the opportunity to pursue an Instrument rating, Multi, Comm, CFI, ect. (This college is not Embry-Riddle. Although I’ve toured their extremely impressive campus I’m in no shape to swim in that sort of debt.) I’ve read forums, have spoken with different pilots and have seen a few documentaries. I’d like to know first hand from newly inked CFI’s if this career path sets potential pilots (civilian) up for unemployment lines and food stamps.

I am currently a Psych major at another college. Have been for a year, going on two. Frankly, I am no longer interest in this field (in a professional sense). I have thoroughly enjoyed working for my Private License and I feel I would enjoy working as a CFI… as long as I can eat at the end of the day. Unfortunately, I hear federal grants do not cover instructor and fuel costs. My tuition is fully covered at my current school- this would have been difficult to part from if it weren’t for my run-ins with previous psych graduates and learning of their outcomes. I’m not sure what I’m looking for here… maybe the comfort of knowing some CFI’s are holding it together out there. I think any greenhorn pilot would appreciate just that much more assurance.

Thoughts?

ERAU says that when you have their flight training program on your resume, your’s gets bumped to the top of the resumes that an airline looks at. This is a very convincing sales pitch here as they are a big school and airlines will notice it. I’m currently working on a BS in aviation maintenance [...]
