When I graduate this December, I will owe about $20,000 in federal student loans. My friend and her husband are buying a house, and neither of them have student loans. My friend told me that they were told that student loans still count as debt when they are calculating if you qualify for a mortgage loan. My question is, do student loans make it more difficult to buy a house? If so, should I rent before I buy a house and try to pay down the loans before I do try to buy a house?

BTW My husband and I have a credit card that we owe about $3,000 on, but I plan to pay that off before buying a house. My husband has no student loans.
