My wife and I reside in China. We have a friend that has a valid Chinese passport and has obtained US B visas in the past. He is interested in purchasing real-estate in Ohio and having a house built. He would like to eventually immigrate to the US. Are there any laws prohibiting him from purchasing real-estate and building a house now? He has the financial means. Would owning real-estate help him in the immigration process?

2 Thoughts on Can a Chinese national purchase real-estate and contract a house to be built?

Yes, he can buy whatever he wants.

It will NOT effect his visa or immigration status in any way though.

Anyone from any country of the world is able to purchase and own land in the United States, this is not abnormal. Many foreigner from many countries around the world own land, buildings and other property in the United States. Many foreign corporations own very expensive properties in the United States.

This person would need to obtain a mortgage loan, through a United States mortgage company or pay cash for the purchase. The down payment would be determined by the use of the house. If this would be his primary residence a FHA mortgage loan down payment could be as low as 3.5%

I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.
